![]() ![]() Oh well, we have the future to look forward to. ![]() Our only complaint was about the short show length. This was OUR night! These small venues are just the best because the whole audience is on display and you can witness everybody rocking out. You reach a point in life and every milestone that you achieve becomes important. Not a bad not night for young retired senior citizens. What a blast it was to finally party together again for the concert and sing and dance to the songs we love. This concert was the first time it was seated together adults only. Through the following years we adults have been present together although not seated near by. That DD concert was the first time that my whole family as well as our best friends and their family attended together. This concert was a culmination of events that started on 3/2/01 at the Beacon Theater. Dom Brown has become one of finest lead guitarist witnessed by me and doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Simon's voice was grand due to extended rest period. Sound system was clear and great as well as the light show. As previously stated DD is my all time favorite band. Ovation Hall was a magnificent theater to see a concert in and recommend it to all. Third review after MSG NY and Encore Halloween Vegas shows. ![]() ![]() But look closer at the data and it becomes clear that there were more than eight hours' difference between those getting the most and the least sleep. In one Australian study, the average amount of sleep over a 24-hour period among 554 four- to six-month-olds was 14 hours. The amount of variation is also clear if you look at how babies actually sleep. "These slightly different guidelines highlight the fact that even leading experts disagree about infant sleep," Gregory says. Neither body makes specific recommendations for nap versus nighttime sleep amounts. Meanwhile, sleep length recommendations from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine make no recommendations at all for infants under four months old. She points out that it has been recommended by the US's National Sleep Foundation that babies up to three months old should obtain 14-17 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period, but that as few as 11 or as many as 19 hours might be appropriate. "Just as adults differ in terms of their sleep, so do babies," says Alice Gregory, a psychology professor specialising in sleep at Goldsmiths University of London and the author of the book Nodding Off: The Science of Sleep. Short-term randomised controlled trials have found that babies given a memory task did better when they napped and, in findings that will surprise exactly zero parents, that fatigued infants had a harder time dealing with a stressful episode than alert infants.īut while that might mean we shouldn't do anything (such as deliberately forcing a child to stay awake) to inhibit sleep, it doesn't mean that every baby requires 12 hours of unbroken sleep a night and several two-hour naps per day, either. Of course, it's likely that the relationship between sleep and development goes both ways. So, it is difficult to unravel how much of the association may be the reverse: children with ADHD may simply sleep less. This would involve sleep-depriving one group of children over years. The only way to know if a certain amount (or lack) of sleep "causes" a specific condition such as ADHD, as might seem to be suggested by research showing a correlation between children who consistently slept less overnight and ADHD, would be to set up a randomised controlled study. They are also correlations, not causations. Many of these longer-term findings, however, involve school-aged children, not babies. A lack of sleep has been associated with cardiometabolic risk factors, an increased risk of ADHD and low cognitive performance, and with poorer emotional regulation, academic achievement and quality of life. Throughout the following century, although these suggested amounts declined, recommended sleep consistently ran around 37 minutes more than the actual sleep babies were getting, paving the way for decades of concerned parents.Įxperts agree that sleep is crucial for babies and young children (and, for that matter, for adults). The first "scientific" guidelines date as early as 1897, when, in a book on sleep for the London-based Contemporary Science Series, a Russian physician recommended that newborns should sleep 22 hours a day. Worrying about whether babies are getting enough sleep isn't new. "And that affects the way in which we think about what babies should be able to do, and how babies should be treated." (Read more about how sleeping through the night is a relatively new phenomenon, even for adults.) "But that's what people in Western societies have become accustomed to. "The way in which we sleep now in the 21st Century is kind of odd, in an evolutionary sense, because we weren't evolved to sleep like we're dead for an eight-hour period, and not wake up, in total silence and total darkness," says Helen Ball, professor of anthropology at Durham University and the director of the Durham Infancy and Sleep Centre. Taken too far, it can cause a great deal of anxiety and stress for parents – and even be unsafe for the babies themselves. Even some paediatricians warn parents that, if these goals aren't reached, children are less likely to get the sleep they need to grow and thrive.īut not only is this idea of independent, uninterrupted baby sleep far from universal, it is also very different to how human infants have slept through most of our species' history. Particularly in the West, an industry of sleep coaches, books and articles has sprung up, promising to help families achieve what many see as the holy grail: a baby who sleeps in a crib, alone, all night, and has several long naps during the day. Mention you've had a baby, and almost everyone will ask one thing: how is she sleeping?Īfter all, many exhausted parents look forward to the time when their baby finally sleeps through the night. ![]() ![]() ![]() What it produces is always “statistically plausible”, at least at a linguistic level. It has coherent things to say, that pull in concepts it’s learned, quite often in interesting and unexpected ways. And what’s remarkable is how human-like the output is, not just at a small scale, but across whole essays. A Basic ExampleĪt its core, ChatGPT is a system for generating linguistic output that “follows the pattern” of what’s out there on the web and in books and other materials that have been used in its training. But now-thanks to the success of ChatGPT-as well as all the work we’ve done in making Wolfram|Alpha understand natural language-there’s finally the opportunity to combine these to make something much stronger than either could ever achieve on their own. And this means that ChatGPT can “talk to” Wolfram|Alpha just like humans do-with Wolfram|Alpha turning the natural language it gets from ChatGPT into precise, symbolic computational language on which it can apply its computational knowledge power.įor decades there’s been a dichotomy in thinking about AI between “statistical approaches” of the kind ChatGPT uses, and “symbolic approaches” that are in effect the starting point for Wolfram|Alpha. But they have a common interface: natural language. Wolfram|Alpha does something very different from ChatGPT, in a very different way. But it’s pretty clear that wonderful things are possible. ![]() We’ve just started exploring what this means for ChatGPT. It’s equally, if not more, important for human-like AIs as well-immediately giving them what we can think of as computational knowledge superpowers, that leverage the non-human-like power of structured computation and structured knowledge. And the point is that it’s not just important for us humans. It’s a tremendously powerful way of working. ![]() But I can also immediately call on Wolfram Language and Wolfram|Alpha to tap into a kind of unique “computational superpower” that lets me do all sorts of beyond-human things. And in doing this my goal has been to build a system that can “computationally assist”-and augment-what I and others want to do. I myself have been deeply involved with the computational paradigm for many decades, in the singular pursuit of building a computational language to represent as many things in the world as possible in formal symbolic ways. And indeed one of the great achievements of our civilization over the past several centuries has been to build up the paradigms of mathematics, the exact sciences-and, most importantly, now computation-and to create a tower of capabilities quite different from what pure human-like thinking can achieve. Some of it is instead more formal and structured. And, as I discuss elsewhere, I think its success is probably telling us some very fundamental things about the nature of human thinking.īut while ChatGPT is a remarkable achievement in automating the doing of major human-like things, not everything that’s useful to do is quite so “human like”. Finally, and suddenly, here’s a system that can successfully generate text about almost anything-that’s very comparable to what humans might write. And even having watched developments in the past few years I find the performance of ChatGPT thoroughly remarkable. I’ve been tracking neural net technology for a long time (about 43 years, actually). And it’s happening now with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. It happened with our Physics Project in 2020. It happened to us with Wolfram|Alpha back in 2009. It’s always amazing when things suddenly “just work”. “What Is ChatGPT Doing … and Why Does It Work?” » ![]() ![]() Platform : PC, MacOS, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X/S Right now, this is an early access title, so you can expect some bugs and updates as the developers introduce new features.
